Stroke / Trans-Ischemic Attack (TIA)

Indication:

            A Stroke or Trans-Ischemic Attack (TIA) occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or severely reduced.  This can be due to ischemia (lack of blood flow), blockage (thrombosis, arterial embolism) or hemorrhage (leakage of blood).  Permanent neurological damage can occur within minutes.

Precaution:

  • Scene safety

Procedure

  • Airway
    • Advanced airway may be necessary
  • Breathing
  • Circulation
  • High Flow Oxygen is recommended
  • Aggressively manage airway and secretions
  • Semi-fowlers or lateral recumbent positioning if possible
  • Consider:
    • Hypoglycemia
  • Attempt to determine last time seen symptom free
  • Perform a Cincinnati Pre-Hospital Stroke Scale if time permits
    • Do not delay transport
  • Notify the receiving facility of possible Stroke or Trans-Ischemic Attack
  • Vascular access
